If the person you speak to says you can't stop the payments, ask to speak to someone more senior. But the company should take your phone call as the instruction and stop the arrangement straight away, not wait for you to confirm in writing. If you phone, it's a good idea to follow up the call in writing so you have proof of your instruction to cancel. You should point out to the card issuer that they should follow the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) guidance on unauthorised payments from your account. They should not apply a blanket policy of refusing to refund payments taken when the client gave their account number out. If you ask to stop a payment, the card issuer should investigate each case on its own merit. They have to stop the payments if you ask them to. Your card issuer has no right to insist that you ask the company taking the payment first. You can tell the card issuer by phone, email or letter. To withdraw consent, simply tell whoever issued your card (the bank, building society or credit card company) that you don’t want the payment to be made. The law says you can withdraw your consent and stop a future payment under a continuous payment authority at any time up to the end of business on the day before the payment is due. If you stop payments which relate to another agreement, such as a loan or to pay for a club or gym membership or a magazine subscription, you’ll need to make another arrangement to pay the money you agreed. You'll still have to pay for the goods or service This page tells you about when you can stop a card payment, how to stop card payments and what to do if the card provider doesn't put things right. The rules about cancelling future card payments do not apply to card purchases for goods or services, such as in a shop or paying a hotel bill. regular payments, such as payments for a gym membership or magazine subscription.one-off payments, for example to pay back a payday loan.If you agree that someone can take a payment from your credit or debit card at a future date, known as a continuous payment authority, you can cancel the payment before it is taken. Surprisingly, the small city is on top of all the latest food and diet trends.īut some traditions are worth keeping, like Sunday supper, which is why another James Beard chef in town, John Fleer, is hosting them. Need your daily pressed juice? Sure thing. A red double-decker bus outfitted with tables and retro chandeliers called Double D's? That's where you get your java fix.ĭairy free? No problem. You won't find a chain of any kind in the main core of downtown - not even a Starbucks. "It gives these chefs an opportunity to push the limits."Īsheville is not a cookie-cutter city. "There's this boundless creativity that's harnessed through Blind Pig," Moore says. The club hosts one-off dining experiences with other local culinarians, each with a unique concept based on a musical artist, type of cuisine or time period. The core of his culinary style is experimental, which is why he's the director of the Blind Pig Supper Club. Rest assured, such ingredients do not make their way onto his menus. While Button is innovative, her style is approachable, much like fellow chef Michael Moore, who boasts of keeping ant larvae as an ingredient in his cupboard next to the brown sugar. Along with her family, Button opened Cúrate tapas bar in downtown Asheville in 2011, followed by speakeasy-style bar and eatery The Nightbell earlier this year. In April, local chef Katie Button of Cúrate and The Nightbell was named "Best New Chef" by Food + Wine magazine. Locals call it "foodtopia" for its thriving community of culinary experts who are crafting unique food experiences with precision, passion and a burst of local flavor. With five James Beard-honored chefs setting up shop in Asheville, the food and drink scene is on par with America's most acclaimed foodie cities. At the same time, lush mountains beg for adventure in the distance, and Asheville's cultural roots - the core of what makes the city special - are ever-present.įrom literary and classic American royalty to modern-day creatives whose passion projects range from pop-up kitchens to performance art, the spirit in Asheville is anything but a snooze. It's a strange introduction to what lies ahead in downtown, where buzzing buskers and a newly revitalized riverfront are ready to woo. The city's one-terminal airport has a sleepy feel. Known for its easy access to the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian Trail, the city of 80,000 is now on the rise as a hot spot for foodies, too. If there were a reality television competition for America's next top place to visit, odds are in Asheville's favor. Good A:M saw Mac being more experimental with production, song construction, and overall concept. Unlike Mac Miller’s projects at the time, ambition for him came in the form of song construction since he maintained leveled hip-hop patterns throughout the first half of the decade. Mac isn’t new to singing, but he put it on the back burner since it wasn’t one of his strengths. Whether we are listening to his darkened thoughts, clogged in the back of his mind like on “Grand Finale” off his Faces, or remedy an argument like on “We” off The Divine Feminine, we’re left in awe by how personable he can be. But like his storytelling skills, Mac lets his voice express vulnerability since it allows for more emotional range than rapping. Mac Miller is a standard falsetto without much range in pitch, with his voice only going deeper. It speaks to the vulnerability, as it is a standard for love ballads, which in turn mirrors the vulnerability we hear from his singing. He has been able to create cohesive and intricate music, as his focus remained on sonic motifs - Macadellic had psychedelic overtones, K.I.D.S had boom-bap made by weed smokers, and The Divine Feminine has whimsical piano keys. And Mac is privy to this, as he didn’t dabble with production until later in his career. For an artist, it is sometimes hard to create unison between sound motifs when using different producers as their input is varied on their strengths. Mac Miller has always been a gifted musician however, after Watching Movies With The Sound Off, Mac Miller would shift almost all the production to others. To this day, I still firmly believe it, despite knowing that Mac had something better lying dormant in the crevices of his mind that we will never get to hear. I remember when I first heard The Divine Feminine - immediately, I galavanted about proclaiming this as Mac’s opus as an artist. The five years since haven’t felt like five years. For Mac Miller, The Divine Feminine is the latter. Like I’ve mentioned previously, I’m someone who holds superlatives at a low - save for the few - some astound me from the length since original release or the feeling of time in-between. Overall, Mac Miller’s “Good A:M” lands the rapper back in control of his destiny with a record better than most releases this year, so far. There aren’t many rappers who immediately jump to me to listen to their work within minutes of release - Kanye, Common, and Mac Miller, are, and were, some of the very few I have a watchful ear. He keeps featured artists to a minimum: frequent collaborator Ab-Soul, Based God, Miguel (for his usual schtick) and Lil B, whose logic defying, oddball ballad manages to not be nails-on-chalkboard bad. Miller does not make a single mistake with his lyrics, even when admirably shuffling between flows varying from UGK-era bombast and Kendrick Lamar-esque precision. Weak lyrics can be stashed throughout Max Martin’s beats (The Weeknd’s “I Can’t Feel My Face”) and repetitive lyrics can be ignored on Dr. Perhaps no other music genre depends more heavily on the actual talent of its artists than rap. The album is a potpourri of melodic harmonies, dwindling piano keys and genre-crossing beats headlined by an assertive Miller. The result was the frustratingly inconsistent content of “Watching Movies With The Sound Off.” Pockmarked with experimental monotone mumbling, it momentarily rendered Miller a pseudo intellectual and left critics and listeners wondering if he was on the brink of irrelevancy. The X-axis reflects the consequences of Miller’s move to Los Angeles and affiliation with the city’s rap acts Odd Future and Black Hippy. Miller never shies away from addressing his history with drugs in both his personal and professional life, but the tone in which he addresses these issues vary. On the Y-axis, his early years of making music, including his first independent album “Blue Slide Park,” are marked with influences of 90s boom-bap: recycled Lord Finesse instrumentals, Nas samples and a love of weed. Miller’s career is a distinct graph of phases. Born Malcolm McCormick, Miller made his major debut with “Good A:M” after releasing half a dozen mixtapes, two independent albums and even an instrumental album under the name of his alter-ego, Larry Fisherman. Pittsburgh native Mac Miller has been rapping since 2008, initially performing under the alias Easy Mac. It appears the guys from Gearbox feel the same way, and they've been working hard to bring Halo's multiplayer to the Internet the way we always thought it should be. So while the console hardcore has been more than happy with Halo's multiplayer offerings on the Xbox, a number of us at GameSpy have been longing to take the Master Chief into battle from in front of our PCs, mouse at the ready. (In fact, one of our programmers took it upon himself to create the GameSpy Tunnel application shortly after Halo's release, allowing players to find opponents and play Halo online.) For a group that was raised playing PC games like Quake, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike over the Inetrnet (among others), the lack of proper online support felt like a disappointment. The game offered countless multiplayer modes, and the ability to play via splitscreen and LAN, but with no way to play over the Internet. Some called it "Game of the Year." A few even dubbed it was "the best game EVER." Ever since, we've heard tales of Halo's multiplayer being played nonstop in various offices on a nightly basis, even today.īut we're pretty big on multiplayer ourselves here at the GameSpy offices, and we couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed by Halo's multiplayer support. Many reviews gave it perfect (or near-perfect) scores. The original, unaltered Pixel Live Wallpaper APK is available on APKMirror, but again, they won't work on Pixel or non-Pixel devices even if you sideload them. If you're interested in trying out the new live wallpapers from the Google Pixel 4 on your own device, you can download the modified APK from the link below. The instructions on how to get it working can be found here. Update 9/29/19 5:25 PM ET: The developer has figured out how to get the unique features working for the "Compass," "Doodle," and "Sights from the sun" live wallpapers. Lastly, the live wallpapers that were unlocked may not reflect the entire set of live wallpapers on retail units, though we're getting close to the launch date so we won't have to wait long to find out. Furthermore, the unique features for some of the wallpapers, like setting the planet for "Sights from the sun" or the color for "Doodle," require integration with the Pixel Themes app and hence haven't been fully ported. That means the live wallpapers in the modified APK won't react to changes in the system theme, but Pandey said he'll try to make a separate version with this behavior intact for supported Android versions. To get the Pixel 4 live wallpaper port working on older Android versions, Pandey said he had to disable the WallpaperColors API that's responsible for this behavior. What's interesting about a lot of these live wallpapers is that they support the system-wide dark mode toggle in Android 10, but of course, there's no dark mode toggle if you aren't on Android 10 or Android 9-based One UI. Our company runs several applications within the Citrix environment, so in addition to my normal desktop applications, there are several programs that I need to run from either a direct Citrix shortcut, or via Citrix remote desktop, which I believe is running Windows 7. In the display settings, I have the 'Change size of text, apps and other items' parameter within the 'Scale and Layout' section in the Display properties set to 100% for these two secondary displays. I have read elsewhere that one of the suggestions is to set the resolution of all monitors the same, but I do NOT want to change the native resolution on the Surface Book to match the secondary monitors and replacing those monitors simply isn't an option. I use a Surface Dock, which is connected to a full-size keyboard and mouse, portal SSD drive and two identical Viewsonic external LCD monitors.īoth monitors are running at a resolution of 1920x1080. In the display settings, I have the 'Change size of text, apps and other items' parameter within the 'Scale and Layout' section in the Display properties set to 200% for the primary display. I have a Microsoft Surface Book running Windows 10 Pro with a native resolution of 3000x2000. I believe I read somewhere that using multiple monitors with different resolutions is not officially supported by Citrix, but I'm hoping someone has a work-around, as nothing I have found seems to solve my issue and the Citrix Workspace application is mostly useless for me at this point. I've searched through the various support forums here and on other sites and have found that other users have experienced similar problems to mine, but I haven't found anyone with the same exact problem. The reliance on a single raw material is nothing new, of course: The auto industry owes its very existence to pumping crude oil out of the earth. “In the next 10 years, it will be everything.” “If you want to be king of the world in the next 10 years, you have to have cobalt,” says Jean-Luc Kahamba Kukenge, deputy general manager of the Congolese mine Commus Global, which is owned by the China’s Zijin Mining Group, when I meet him in Kolwezi. On the ground in Congo, the pressure to produce cobalt has reached a fever pitch. Demand for cobalt for lithium-ion batteries alone could triple by 2025, and then double again, reaching about 357,000 tons a year by 2030-nearly seven times the current level, according to the London-based cobalt-trading company Darton Commodities. That means the spike in cobalt may have only just begun. Miners pulling up a bag of cobalt inside the Kasulo mine near Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And Volkswagen aims to have one-quarter of its production devoted to electric vehicles by 2025. General Motors, for example, says it is planning for an all-electric future. As many governments around the world-if not the one in Washington, D.C.-begin rolling out their climate-change targets to curb carbon emissions, so automakers are hugely ramping up production of electric vehicles. The global transition to renewables-the biggest energy shift in a century-could depend in good measure on how readily cobalt will be available over the next several years, and how expensive it will be to produce and refine. Without it, our digital lives-at least for the moment-would be unable to function as they do.Īnd yet, as valuable as cobalt is today, its crucial role is only now coming into focus. Cobalt provides a stability and high energy density that allows batteries to operate safely and for longer periods. That soaring appetite for cobalt is a product of today’s device-driven tech economy: The metal is a key component in the lithium-ion batteries that power countless millions of smartphones, computers, and tablets. It’s more difficult still for diggers living in poverty, like Lukasa, to understand a surge in demand for the mineral that has sent the price of cobalt on commodities markets rocketing up some 400%, from about $10 a pound in 2016 to a peak of about $44 in April. But that business is hard to fathom for those living near Kolwezi, the hardscrabble center of the cobalt industry in Congo. Lukasa has, he says, recently begun to grasp that his cobalt mining earnings are a pittance compared with the sums that traders make selling it on the world market. With a hint of pride he says, “On good days I can earn 15,000 francs.” That adds up to about $9.įrom his vantage point in one of the poorest countries in the world, Lukasa has little awareness that a multibillion-dollar scramble is underway for the grayish metal he digs out of the ground some 300 days a year. Lukasa is wearing a T-shirt with “Prada” written on the front and sitting under a shade tree in his village on a recent Sunday, his one day off, as he explains his routine. “I sell it to Chinese people,” he says, referring to the buyers from Chinese commodity trading companies who dominate the market in the area. He hoists the load, which can weigh up to 22 pounds, on his back and lugs it for an hour by foot to a trading depot. ( Fortune is withholding the name of the village in order to protect Lukasa and other children.) Once at the mine, Lukasa spends eight hours hacking away in a hole to accumulate chunks of a mineral that is crucial to keeping our modern lives moving: cobalt.īy about 3 p.m., Lukasa has filled a sack with his day’s haul. Then he makes the two-hour walk from his tiny village in the southern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to a government-owned mining site. The slender 15-year-old, with an oval face and piercing stare, slips out of his family’s mud-brick home before dawn six days a week. MOST OF HIS NEIGHBORS are still sound asleep at 5 a.m., when Lukasa rises to begin his 12-hour workday. |
